WSDA rallies aboard the Martin Sheen with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – June 28/18

The Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance held a rally aboard the Sea Shepherd Conservation society’s Martin Sheen research vessel at Granville Island June 28/18, to celebrate the launch of Operation Virus Hunter 3. Dr. Alexandra Morton, Hereditary Chief George Quocksister Jr., and Sea Shepherd’s crew will be collecting scientific data and documenting the impacts of open net pen fish farms on the surrounding ecosystem. We were so happy to be joined by many wild salmon supporters including Kurt Beardslee of the Wild Fish Conservancy Northwest, who traveled all the way from Washington, where fish farms are already being phased out and the government requires testing for viruses, something DFO is unwilling to do. Kurt spoke about the opportunity BC has to remove wish farms from our shared Salish Sea.
Eddie spoke about the need for all Nations, including nations from the Salish Sea and Fraser river to unite, to protect wild salmon from industrial harm. Chief Quocksister, who was accompanied by his son, shared his observations of grotesque diseased fish he has filmed in the fish farms, as well as herring and small fry trapped in the net pens. Tracy spoke abut the devastation that loss of wild salmon will have on the entire Fraser valley ecosystem, the harm to the health and economic well being of rivers Nations caused by lack of access to a traditional wild salmon diet, and her frustration with provincial and federal governments who are failing to take action in keeping with the urgency of the salmon crisis.
